ETHIOPIA - MANUFACTURING HUB

Imagen
Can Ethiopia be Africa's leading manufacturing hub? §     2 With Ethiopia having the second biggest population in Africa, it is under growing pressure to tackle unemployment. The BBC's Alastair Leithead visited the country to find out how it is tackling the problem. The factory workers sing Ethiopia's national anthem in unison as one shift ends and another prepares to begin. Outside, a fleet of passenger buses pulls into Hawassa Industrial Park, as thousands of textile workers - most of them women - switch places. The new arrivals take up their stations behind sewing machines, ironing boards and cutting tables as the shirts and suits start taking shape. The park, claimed to be the biggest in Africa, is 140 hectares (350 acres) of factories, with a water treatment plant and its own textile mill. Six months after opening in southern Ethiopia, 10,000 people already work here, and at full capacity it is expected to provide 60,000 jobs. "The pay isn...

Economic Snapshot for the Major Economies May 2917

May 31, 2017 Looming uncertainties threaten global economic recovery  Global economic activity firmed up at the outset of the year according to comprehensive data for Q1. Global GDP rose 2.9% annually (Q4 2016: +2.8% year-on-year), which was a notch above the 2.8% expansion that  our panel of analysts had projected last month . On top of the acceleration in  China  reported last month, growth in the  United States  was revised upward on stronger private consumption and investment. The economic story remained largely intact in the Euro area, with GDP benefiting from a declining unemployment rate and a robust external sector. In  Japan , a competitive yen and healthy investment buttressed economic growth. On the downside, economic dynamics in the  United Kingdom  started to feel the pinch of high inflation and subdued wage growth. Nevertheless, uncertainty is looming on the horizon and some events are threatening the global economic r...

AFRICA_ PRIVATE EQUITY IN AFRICA

P rivate-equity (PE) activity in Africa has increased significantly in the last 30 years . From a dozen or so active general partners (GPs) in the region in 1990, there are currently at least 140 GPs active in Africa. Between 2010 and 2016, GPs invested around US$25.6bn across sectors that ranged from consumer goods to water and sanitation. GPs’ approach to investment in Africa is, in several ways, distinct from how the asset class functions in other parts of the world. For instance, PE fund raising and deal execution have a longer lead time in Africa than PE funds focused on other regions; the deal sizes are usually smaller ; the average holding periods sometimes extend over eight years ; and the exit options are weighted towards trade sales. Trade sales are associated with corporate buyers purchasing assets in their core line of business. PE, therefore, plays an important role in facilitating the presence and strategic expansion of corporates in the region....
